Another story I wrote. (: Hope you like it.
Hello. I’m Grace Tan. I’m 14. And I’m wheel chair bound. See what happened was that while my sister and me was still growing, something had happen on a checkup. Some chemical reaction had done something so one of us was going to be deformed. When I came out the doc told my mum the bad news and everything in the house was changed. Anyway I want to tell you about the two most wonderful days of my life. It started by me waking up. I went down slowly to the living room. (One thing you may like to know, there’s no stairs. They had been removed and replaced with slopes so that I could go up and down as I wish; isn’t that so cool!!) My only sibling and twin, Mandy, and mum, Kate, were in there and having an argument. As soon as I came in they stopped. They didn’t like to have fights at all in front of me. I never really knew why. “We have a surprise for you.” My mum walked forward. “Who do you love?” Mandy came forward too. “You guys?” they both smiled. “And?” they said at the same time. “Westlife?” “Yes,” Mandy smiled. I looked at them confused. Mum produced a letter.
“Hello. I’m Kate. I have a child that’s wheel chair bound and she loves you guys a lot. She can’t do a lot what other kids do and I know that what she wants more than any other thing in the world is to meet you (though she won’t admit to it.) It would mean a lot if you could just meet her for an hour or so. Please.
Kate.”
“MUM!!” I looked up. “You can’t do that! There are a lot of other kids that also want to meet them that have more chance of meet them. You can’t do that! And anyway they’ll say no.” “What makes you think so?” she produced another letter.
“Hi Kate, its Westlife, we’d love to meet your child. How about we meet after the stage performance in Sincil Bank Stadium, Lincoln? Perhaps 11 pm. We know it’s late but it’s the only time we can meet anyone. But can you please, please send us her name as well as someone who can stay with her? Send her name and a couple of other details in the envelope that came with this letter. That letter has our assurance that it will be able to reach us. Thanks and we’ll see you soon.”
The letter was signed by all of them. For a while I just stared at it. All the while I could hear the song Flying Without Wings. “A simple line can make you laugh or cry”. Anyway the time I was to meet them was the very next day 11 pm. So the next day they helped dress me up and got me into a car. “Where did you get this?!” I half yelled then apologized. “It’s Westlife’s dear.” Mandy answered.
We decided that Mandy would come with me. My mum would just walk me out. So we slowly got in. This car was kind of different. It’s for wheel chairs. There’s this big space with a seatbelt that was very confusing and it was for me. That definitely made me feel big. It’s a car made for me!! Or at least wheelchair bound people. Anyway, we soon arrived at the stadium with our backstage pass and we were led deep in. I think we were walking for ten minutes. And finally the guards that were with us said “In there.” and showed us into a room. Comfy was my first thought. “They’ll see you in about ten minutes. Hopefully.” the guard tried to joke. We smiled back. As soon as they left Mandy plonked down onto the sofa. “Pig.” I commented. “What?!” “It’s not fair that you fall down there. It looks nice.” “It is nice.” Mandy teased. “Ha ha.” Soon we heard people coming down. They were laughing a lot. “Oh!” Mandy jumped off the sofa then sat back down.
The laughter had passed us. “False alarm.” I grinned. Mandy lay down again. And the door opened. Mandy jumped up again, freaked. Shane came in and I laughed at Mandy. I couldn’t help it. I mean if you had seen Mandy’s face and the way she jumped YOU would’ve laughed as well. Nicky came in next and kind of stared. Kian next and finally Mark. I was still laughing and Mandy was blushing. Shane had seen most of it and was laughing a little. The others were just looking confused.
“Ok.” Mark raised his hands half way up as if to say stop. Mandy gave a shy smile but I was still giggling. “Hi.” Mandy waved and nudged me. “Hi. Thanks for see-” I was still laughing. “Hey.” they moved forward to shake hands with me and I did it without looking at any of them coz I was still giggling Soon they had sat down and waited for me to stop. “Hi.” I greeted. “Hey.” “Hi.” “Hello.” they answered. “Sorry. It’s just that it was funny.” I apologized. “Nah, it’s ok.” Nicky gave me a smile which made me warm all over. “But em...what were you laughing about?” We talked about a lot of stuff. I asked them questions, played a couple of games. And got a picture signed. Actually had four signed... “Em, Kath,” Mark asked. “Yea?” “D’you mind if a camera comes in?” “Err, it’s coming in now or what?” “Only if you don’t mind,” Nicky said. “Coz there’s gonna be some talk shows that gonna call you, be on their shows. Stuff like that.” Kian said. “Err..but..err...ok.” I raised my eyebrows. That’s weird. Why are they asking me? “It’s alright if you don’t want to.” Shane said. I said it was alright and the camera came in.
And soon I had to go, the reason being that instead of leaving after twenty minutes or so it was one hour after. I do not know how that could have happened. But it did. I’m not going to complain. Anyway noticing the time Mandy got up slowly. “We’ll walk out with you if you like.” Mark said, getting up too. “Sure.” I smiled. We walked out, now quiet. Now talking. Just now it had taken ten minutes to get in. Now it took five. Suddenly we were outside. Nothing in sight, just a few cars parked. So Mandy and I would have to walk home. Of course we told them we’d take a taxi. But I wanted to stretch my arms and Mandy wanted to walk. So Mandy and I crossed. We had to go by the slope so we had to go one round. As I passed them for the last time, I stopped and looked at Westlife for the last time in real life. Not in pictures, they could move and they were right in front of me. They waved. I waved back. I really enjoyed myself. Obviously. We walked off slowly. I looked back once and they had gone. Everyone but Nicky. I didn’t know why. He waved. I waved. And Mandy and I went home. I won’t ever forget the day I saw them.
(Honestly, who would?)
